Free document control templates for Excel.
Four registers you can download and start using today: drawings, documents, transmittals, and RFIs. Each one ships as an Excel file with dropdowns, a frozen header row, example rows over an example project, and a second sheet explaining how to fill each column. A CSV copy comes with every template, so the same register opens in Google Sheets or anything else.

Four registers, built from document-control practice.
Start with the register you need first. Each page sets out every column and what it records, six steps for keeping the register reliable, and the point at which a spreadsheet has done its job.

Four registers, one record.
Each register answers a different question about the same set of documents: what exists, what was issued, and what was asked. Keep the document numbers and revisions identical across all four and the four answers line up.
The drawing register holds every drawing on the job, with the revision that is current and the status it carries. The transmittal and RFI registers point back to these numbers.
The document register holds every controlled document the job produces, the drawings among them, plus specifications, reports, procedures, and manuals, with each document's revision, approver, and file location.
The transmittal register records what left the office: the package number, the recipient, the date, and each document at the revision that was sent.
The RFI register records the questions raised during construction, the answers, and the drawing revisions those answers trigger.
For the terms these registers use, from revision control to superseded drawings, read the document control glossary. For what changes when the registers move off a spreadsheet, see document control software.
