A small team sees the drawing without a CAD licence.

A council records or asset team is small, and most of the people who need a drawing do not run CAD. Developer data checked before it becomes yours.

A subdivision finishes and the developer hands over an ADAC XML file with the as-constructed drawings of the same works. Somebody has to decide whether the stormwater, sewer, water, and road assets in it are fit to enter the register. Done by hand that is slow, and the answer moves with who is reviewing and how busy the week is.

Whatever passes the review is what the council operates from. A pit missing from the file, a pipe recorded at half its drawn length, or a manhole sitting well away from its recorded position all land in the asset register and the GIS, and the cost surfaces years later, when a crew is sent to the wrong place.

Open the drawing from the map of your roads and drainage.

Roads, footpaths, and drainage are spread across the whole council area, and the map is where staff already look. The Esri and ArcGIS connector ties each drawing to its place on the network, so the engineering record opens straight from the map you run for roads, drainage, and reserves. One plan often covers dozens of pits or a whole length of main, so a drawing carries a location for every asset on it rather than a single pin.

The REST API returns document locations as a GeoJSON feature collection, so ArcGIS can read them as a layer, and an asset or works management system such as TechnologyOne or WorxOnline can resolve a document link from an asset ID. How do councils manage engineering drawings today, and how is Lunr different?
Most councils keep drawings in nested folders on SharePoint or a shared drive, split across teams and outsourced consultants. The current revision is a guess, superseded sheets stay in circulation, the text inside a scanned plan is invisible to search, and there is no audit trail. We are a small team without CAD licences. Can staff still view drawings?
Yes. Anyone with access opens DWG, DGN, and PDF drawings in the browser through the Rift viewer, with layers, measurement, and markup, and nothing to install. Models open in Foundry and point clouds in Nimbus. A CAD seat is only needed to author drawings, so records, asset, and works staff read the plan without one, which matters when the team is small.

Does Lunr validate ADAC submissions?
Yes. Turn ADAC validation on for a project and every submission loaded into it is checked against the ADAC standard your council has configured, local amendments included. Lunr validates the XML against the schema, the mandatory attributes, the value lists, and the business rules, then reads the drawing geometry and reconciles it against the data in real-world coordinates, so an asset missing from either side or a length that disagrees is raised. Findings attach to the document as validation errors, and they hold as-constructed status and asset handover until they are resolved.
